Review
“Susan Lacke is not only a great writer but also one of the most hilarious people around...And her book? It’s all that and more…It’s poignant. It’s vulnerable. It’s real. It’s inspiring. It’s funny. It’s deeply personal and reflective. It’s the kind of story that makes you look within...that makes you want to call up your best friend in the middle of the night and say ‘thank you from the bottom of my heart’. It’s the kind of read that makes you want to write a bucket list and start checking things off of it now… This book is SO F*CKING beautiful.†― Fit Bottomed Girls“With humor and brutal honesty, Lacke draws you in to a touching story that's refreshingly free of affected ‘inspirational crap.’ It made me laugh, gave me pause to reflect on my own fallable inner voice, and to rejoice over relationships strengthened through sport. Brilliant!†― Heather Wurtele, professional triathlete“I really loved Susan Lacke’s book. Her friendship with Carlos made me laugh and cry. More than anything, Life’s Too Short to Go So F*cking Slow is a reminder that sport is so much more than fitness: Sports are about friendship and the power to change the course of our lives.†― Rachel Joyce, professional triathlete“I was captivated and inspired by Susan's story of the profound transformative powers of friendship and sport. To see the progression and improvement in her life reminds us all of the value these human relationships and athletic endeavors have, and of the tremendous capacity for change and growth that lies in each person.†― Ben Hoffman, professional triathlete“Life’s Too Short…cements Lacke’s reputation as the storyteller of endurance sports.†― Salt Lake magazine“A book you just can’t put down…Susan Lacke shows the reader that we, too, can take Carlos’ passion and love and ‘go the distance’ in whatever we set out to do.†― A Triathlete’s Diary“Life’s Too Short… gave me all the feels. Inspiring and funny, just like Susan.†― Rebecca Warren, Women’s Running

I opened this book about 2 hours ago expecting to read a few pages before picking it back up again tomorrow after work - ha - I just finished reading the book a few minutes ago. This book is one of those easy to read, hard to put down books that draws you into the story. Susan without really trying really pulls you into the story...you quickly start to feel that you are right there along side her for ever ride with Carlos, every side stitch, every dumb decision (I have a made a lot as well), and every win..For those of you that haven't signed up for a race because its too hard - this book will make you want to do one. Not because it is full of inspirational quotes - but just because you want to feel what Susan experienced.Great book - you'd be silly not to pick it up
This book -- well. It’s inspiring and heartbreaking and making me do both the snorty laugh (you know the one) and the ugly cry. Recommend, recommend, recommend — it’s for anyone who’s ever done a triathlon, faced a personal struggle, had a friend or questioned themselves. If you've wanted to do something scary and gone for it, you'll relate. If you've ever found yourself friends with someone who you never envisioned becoming close to, you'll find yourself nodding your head. So, you should get it, is what I’m saying.Disclaimer -- I know Susan, and I either blame her for or credit her with (depends on the day) the fact that I've gone way outside my comfort zone to do some really difficult things. But that's part of why this book is so perfect -- it brings that to everyone, and by the time you finish reading it, you'll feel like you know her too.
Susan Lacke was a self-described trainwreck, a divorced overweight pack-a-day smoker with a penchant for bad relationships and boxed wines. She was also a college professor and after a move to Arizona started working for a tough, no-nonsense multiple Ironman finisher. Sounds like a disaster in the making, but instead he became her mentor and best friend. Yep, he didn't sugarcoat his advice and she rose to his challenges. You'll laugh...and you'll cry. And that's all I'm going to say because I don't want to spoil the rest of the story. Trust me...you won't regret this read. But as I said on my blog review (and I can't post the link because Amazon won't let me), a better title would have been this quote: "Eat, pace yourself, don't be a dumb bunny (you know that's not what he said)...."
This is simply a lovely story about a woman who looking to lead a healthier life style and a man (who becomes her best friend). Preparing and participating in triathlons becomes the gel of the story. Together they train and face life's obstacles (that's putting it mildly -- you will have to read the book to know what I mean). This is so beautifully written. Susan captures the reader on page 1 and takes you through the many miles of her (and Carlos's) journey. You will laugh, you will examine your own life and you will very tear up. She packs a lot into 180 pages and I'd say it's a page turner (and I don't say that often because I often get bored). I wanted more and I hope this isn't her last book.
Picked this up coincidentally before Ironman (IM) Austria - only downside was I read it too fast!Lacke has a penchant for writing - you get swept up into her relationships and up and down thoughts that go with an IM journey - but you don't have to be a triathlete to appreciate it.It was so much better than an I couldn't swim a length / run to the bakery books. My heart goes out to Carlos' family and friends.
I don't usually read books, why read books when you could be training? Something I'm sure a lot of readers or people who were interested in this book enough to read this review might understand.I bought this book to entertain myself during a flight (to a triathlon, obviously) and it has to be one of my favorite books I've ever read. If you're as obsessed with everything triathlon as most triathletes are, you will enjoy this book. It'll make you laugh, cry, and hold your attention throughout.
What a fantastic book. I want to read this again--it was that good! I've already told all of my running/tri friends about it b/c I think it's so relatable to what we go through as athletes and what we share on our journeys in life. I loved the authors honesty, humor and colorful language. I laughed out loud and just couldn't put this book down. The author writes from her heart, tells her story beautifully and pays a warm tribute to her friend/training partner. Carlos would be proud. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your story. Hope to read more from you in the future.
This is the kind of book that once you start you can’t put down. Susan brings you through some of the highest highs (Ironman finish line) to some of the lowest lows (accepting the diagnosis of her Iron-strong friend) in just a few years of her life. It’s raw, it’s honest, & it really makes you take inventory on the important things in life! I love her sense of humor, that occasionally helped fight back the tears. But her expression of love & appreciation for the friendship & lessons that Carlos left her opened the flood gates! I couldn’t have asked for a better ending either... bike in tree!!!
