After reading her stuff, I’m a pretty big fan. She’s bold and definitely tells it the way she thinks it and I respect her for it. I also find her writing to be pretty fun, especially for extremely dense texts and topics. Do I think the Hindu population is being too sensitive for its own good? Criticizes one religion for banning a book and then does it. Also, has anyone read the legal notice from 2010? It’s not only hilarious, it’s infuriating as well. I love reading her stuff and Ramesh Menon’s translations. I think the intelligent are good at being critical of the things they immerse themselves in, Wendy Doniger is no different. But don’t take my word for it, read her stuff.
Wendy Doniger is a preeminent historian of religions. A Sanskrit scholar, Doniger is one of the most qualified authors to write about Indian religions and culture. Her work is respectful and incisive. A must read for India scholars.
Quite interesting, but a bit heavy on the believing side.
Very detailed analysis with a feminist slant. Right on target about the influence of the Brahmins. However, as a Hindu by birth with academic interest on the subject, I found some statements erroneous (in my view) and objectionable. However, it is a work of great scholarship and I recommend it should be read by all interested in the topic.
Gave this a chance. Approached the material very sympathetically. But Doniger's writing is just antagonistic with only a narrow bit of support for her pronouncements. Quite a failure. Horrible waste of money.
I tried to read first 100 pages of the book, looked like the author had a negative prejudice against Hindus which she presented through some crappy logic. Also, the book came with some damages, overall waste of time and effort reading this book.
very dense text. Read very much like a academician's thoughts. One thousand parentheses in middle of sentences to inject thought patterns. I felt there was a lot of very interesting information with a alternative view but I just could not plough through it.
Wendy Donniger has written a book that encapsulates her life long dedication to Hindu culture. I am puzzled why India decided to ban this amazing book.
