#190,217 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I usually use Lonely Planet books, but they didn't have one specifically for Toronto, so I bought this because it was the most recent. It didn't provide opening/closing times for places to see, and the maps were all over the place without the convenience of Lonely Planet, where they at least tell you if you're headed west of this map, go to the map on XX page, etc. Would be more helpful if it was one map per area that included sights, food and hotels, rather than having to constantly flip back and forth if you wanted to find out where a good place to eat was relative to where your next sightseeing destination is located. Also, many restaurants were mentioned but not mapped.

The author is more focused on lauding the merits of the city in great prose than on providing actionable, differentiated advice. According to the guidebook, everything is essentially awesome and worth visiting.

This is a decent guide but not great. Would have been better with where to eat sections for each neighborhood. Did not include a good map of Toronto Transit or where to buy transit passes. We use Rick Steves guides for Europe and have come to expect travel tips. This guide was lacking an "insiders" perspective

It was informative and provided the most basic info, but hardly gave any tips. It does recommend some cool tours and ways to save though. It's good as a general guide but not something you can rely on solely like a Rick Steves book.

Bought as a gift for a friend who was relocating to Toronto for work. IT was the only book available that was published within the past year or so.

Very informative book. Provides many maps to assist in navigating the area. There is also a TTC subway map which is useful when on the move. The hotel reviews were concise and helped greatly when picking a hotel that would fulfill my expectations.

Fodor is always great!

Good book.

I have to confess I approached this book--and the blog of the same name--with some mild trepidation. I feared Burcaw was exploiting his disability, i.e., currying praise for being inspirational when all he's doing is, you know, surviving. I don't like referring to a disability as a disease, either. It's like playing the pity card, emphasizing medicalization and portraying yourself as a victim of said disease.BUT … as Shane himself says, he's just a normal guy. He doesn't want to be pitied and he doesn't want to be special. In fact, he's sort of making fun of all that, turning "aw" & "ow" on its head (to "wa-wo," I guess).BUT … Shane is definitely a talented writer. He's funny and expressive and moving. He has a distinctive "literary voice."BUT… this is a good, quick, and gripping read. It's unfortunate that the publishing pros have relegated it to the "teen" market because it would be good for anyone of any age.Full disclosure: I, too, grew up with spinal muscular atrophy, just like Shane. I identify with many of the experiences he describes here. Some of it cuts so close to the bone that it makes me shiver. That's not funny, I want to scream, when for example he describes being herded to the wheelchair section at a talk Michelle Obama gave at his school, separated from his friends. That's tragic!Yet isn't it also illegal to ghettoize wheelchair folks, to deprive them of at least one "companion" seat? I do wish Shane had a stronger sense of disability rights, of his place in a broad community with a proud and deep history. Not to make the book all serious-like and angry and boring. Just so he'd have some righteous anger. His mission to fit in, to undermine the sense of "tragedy" and "nightmare" that pervades disability, to blur the distinctions of what's considered "normal," is exactly what the movement is all about. It's not just about gaining acceptance for yourself, Shane, but about making the world more respectful of and good-natured toward alla God's chilluns, no matter how they roll.Still, what's great about this book is it's not a rant. He's not on a soapbox (I guess soapboxes used to be big, or something). His candor is startling and refreshing. His humor is fresh and infectious. Yes, I did laugh out loud multiple times. But in some ways this is actually a very deep and serious book. At least to me. Maybe that's because I'm not a teen anymore. So power to Shane! Read his book! Recommend his book! Give it as a gift this holiday season! Your friends will thank you. Maybe Shane himself will thank you. He seems like that kind of guy.Even if he never did post a blurb for MY book.

I bought this book for Amazon Kindle and couldn't put it down. I laughed, I cried and have promoted it to everyone I know. My 16-year-old daughter has read it and is now crushing hard on Shane, "He's hot!" she says. Shane is funny and bravely honest about everything we humans endure, but of course, he is enduring it all in a uniquely terrifying way. The fact that he can laugh at his situation (most of the time) is definitely inspiring. My 16-year-old (in photo) also happens to have the same disease as Shane although a milder form. His experiences mirror hers in such a remarkable way that helped her to feel less isolated...she's a rebel too. Finally, as a mother of a child with SMA, I was able to gain an insight through Shane's book to my daughter's innermost fears and thoughts. Can't wait for the next book Shane!

Since I've been diagnosed with a terminal illness, I lost my sense of humor gradually... I became too self absorbed in my own issues and forgot/ignored how to approach/live my life properly. This read has rekindled my desire to live, laugh and love once again! Thank you S.B. for sharing yourself with us all!

This and more reviews at The Book Bar.coI love biographies, especially humorous ones. Nothing is more eye opening than realizing that your sack of sorry is nothing compared to another's life-altering experiences. I stumbled upon Shane Burcaw's Tumblr page when I first started this blog's Tumblr page, about a year ago. I was an immediate fan of his posts, his jokes (often gross, some intriguing - "Ladies") and his writing style. However, what I wondered most was, how in the world is this guy writing a book on his life? His "T-Rex" arms and hands are tucked to his chest and I wanted to know how was he typing his thoughts out to the universe. Then I started wondering all the other "how does he do it's", that other followers have already questioned and he, so candidly, answers.Basically my body just didn’t feel like developing these proteins while I was in the womb. I was the laziest fetus you’d ever meet.Burcaw, Shane (2014-10-14). Laughing at My Nightmare (p. 13). Roaring Brook Press. Kindle Edition.Personally, my uncle died from ALS and I periodically observed as he progressed from standing, to needing a wheelchair, to being bedridden. I can't fathom the feeling one must experience, slowly losing control of your own body and having others to wait on you. That would be my biggest fear, having to rely on others to do the basic things that everyone takes for granted. All of a sudden it occurred to me; my jaw wasn’t unhinged, but the muscles in my jaw were getting weaker. I was getting worse. Once in a blue moon I lie in bed and think “why me?” as I try to fall asleep. As pathetic as it sounds I usually end up tearing up and hating everything. This was definitely one of those nights.Burcaw, Shane (2014-10-14). Laughing at My Nightmare (pp. 144-145). Roaring Brook Press. Kindle Edition.Shane Burcaw addresses all your questions from, what exactly is his condition, to what his daily routine is like with the support of his family. Moving out and starting your own life is a huge step in a young adult's life. Shane expresses the frustration he has with his own body, but ultimately comes to the conclusion that he can only control so much (he's a bit of a control freak if you ask me; this guy is on top of everything). It is difficult to explain the loss of dignity that accompanies losing the ability to lift up your own head. I have tried to accept the fact that this is my life and [fecal matter] like this is inevitable, but when holding my head up was one of the few things I could do all by myself and it started to slip away, I became very frustrated.Burcaw, Shane (2014-10-14). Laughing at My Nightmare (p. 161). Roaring Brook Press. Kindle Edition.Shane also writes about falling in love, experiencing lust and finding his HEA. It's heartwarming to know that there are individuals out there are are destined soul-mates.Our story is rather unusual, as most of mine are, and filled with millions of details that I could never begin to relate in a single book. This is my poor attempt to summarize our time together.Burcaw, Shane (2014-10-14). Laughing at My Nightmare (p. 222). Roaring Brook Press. Kindle Edition. His Shannon is a force for good and the two, along with the rest of the non-profit managers for LAMN, are going to change the world, simply because Shane is helping individuals laugh again; maybe at his expense or maybe at their own unfortunate circumstances. I came away from this book feeling more open minded to individuals in "handicapped" stereo-types.This was a 'fast read' biography and I encourage you to check it out. And since we opened with having to [evacuate his bladder] in a jar, Shane closes up the book with how he [evacuates his bowels]. You were curious, don't deny it.That’s part of being alive. The beauty begins when you connect with other people and realize that we’re all in the same boat. Once we accept that life is inherently difficult, we can move on and focus on having a good time despite the tough stuff.Burcaw, Shane (2014-10-14). Laughing at My Nightmare (p. 246). Roaring Brook Press. Kindle Edition.Thank you Shane and the Burcaw family for sharing these very intimate moments with the world.

This was different than the choices I usually make... But so worth it. I was impressed by the mix of bravado and vulnerability. This young man shares EVERYTHING, which takes so much courage. I admire his desire to just live... To try to embrace each experience. That is a universal lesson we can all share. The main reason I didn't give it five stars is that at times I felt like his story took detours that changed his voice in the piece. But overall... An inspirational book, an inspirational young man.

#424,676 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Appearance: True to its name, this is a small pocket sized book from Oxford with a good and sturdy thick cover.Content: If you want a standard, linear progression of the African continent, you must walk away. This book is an small academic companion to african historical studies. Not intending to ACTUALLY speak on African history, the authors rather discuss the many problems, theories and experiences of scholars studying African history. It is an AMAZING read and it lifted the proverbial veil from my eyes. I have since gone on to deepen my knowledge of the academic study of history and its many quandries. A good read for any budding academic, geek, African Studies minor, major, student or interested persons.Categories: African Studies, History.I fully recommend this.

Buy this book because it accomplishes the two prime goals of the state of African history at present anyway: information and agency. The “what” and the “who says” of the discipline which has emerged in our life time (as in “Who high jacked our Africa?”). For example, chapter one is titled “The idea of Africa” and has several subheadings such as “The invention of Africa” before going into more traditional headings such as “The lie of the land.” The last chapter is “Memory and Forgetting.” The usual information is related, and the bibliography is fantastic. All in 160 pages. Remembering how hard it is to write a good 500-word paper, the briefness of the book puts premium on content and deft phrasing. This volume is one of over 200 titles in the series, http://www.veryshortintroductions.com/. Did I say “Buy this book”?

Like many of the OUP "Very Short Introduction" series, you can't really tell what the book is about from the title. This is not a survey of African history, but rather a survey of how historians, political leaders and others have interpreted African history. E.g., colonialists created an African history -- or pretended there wasn't one -- that would best serve the cause of colonialism. That is, if Africa is seen as a land of primitive, savage tribes, the colonial powers could defend their actions as just spreading civilization. Conversely, post-colonialists have often created a nationalistic view of African countries that did not exist prior to the European powers marking arbitary lines on their maps. The authors take pains to note that any statement about Africa as a whole is likely an over-generalization. The history of the Congo area, for instance, is considerably different from that of South Africa. Yet, as diverse as the regions are, the authors assert that the concept of "Africa" shouldn't be abandoned. The whole subject of African history is a difficult one for historians, or anyone, because of the lack of sources. What we know of African cities like Timbuktu is essentially what travelers wrote about them. Often, the African climate has worked to eradicate the records of what might have been there prior to 19th century European colonization. Even oral history is suspect, as oral histories are subject to change over time. This makes it difficult for those attempting to decolonize Africa to actually figure out what a particular African region was like prior to colonization. For once colonization began, the nature of the region might have changed drastically. For instance, the 1996 Rwanda genocide of the Hutu against the Tutsi is not, as depicted in Western media, a struggle between two tribes. The difference between the Hutu and the Tutsi -- genetically the same -- entirely stems from how these people were treated by German and Belgian colonialists, creating an artificial division between them that continued and worsened even after the Europeans were long gone. (It occurs to me as I write this, that this is somewhat similar to the aftermath of Ottoman colonization of Southern Slavs.)But while African history can't escape concentrating on the effects of colonialism, the authors cover other areas, e.g., the participation of African states in the slave trade -- possibly as many slaves went East as went across the Atlantic, and many slaves were transferred internally only. African history can't be discussed without discussing the slave trade, but the authors warn that there was a lot going on at the time not related to the slave trade, so it's a mistake to think of Africa as a continent of victims.History has always been more about interpretation than facts, and that's particularly true in the case of Africa. If you plan on reading any African history, or just want to understand the background of current African political issues, this book will provide needed perspective.

Africa is large and complex and African history is that multiplied many times. There was nothing easy or obvious in the topics covered by author, it all involved great scholarship and mastery of the subject. History and historiography were discussed with just enough background so the person with a casual backround could understand but also with enough depth that provided serious learning for the reader. The book dealt with a variety of topics some which I had little background or interest in, but I found them all well worth reading about.

This slim volume presents an extremely broad brush of the major points of African history, Details pop up to illustrate a point, but the mail thrust is the overall influence (if any) of climate, geography, tribal custom, colonialization, religion, and mineral wealth on history, and how we got to modern Aftrica. If you are interested in a particular region, people, or event, you'll need to check other works, but this is the big picture well presented and well written.

As the title suggests, this is not an in depth study of the entire continent's history, but an interesting look at how historians and others have thought about and used the history of African nations and peoples for a variety of purposes over time.

I agree with previous reviewers. It helped me teach my Advanced Placement World History students about the themes and opportunities of African History.

I was a bit disappointed in this book, as I had been hoping for a summary of the history of Africa. Instead, I found I had purchased a history of the writing of African history. While major trends in the history of Africa were discussed, and as an amateur historian the delvings into how perceptions of African history have changed over the years was still interesting, I found myself thinking at the end...now what I really would like is to read a history of Africa.
