Just kidding. There is only me. I am glad this book was written. I too swallowed the Sybil story when it first came out. Then again, I believed A Million Little Pieces was true as well. In a world where lives have been ruined by accusations of ritual sexual abuse of workers at a daycare center based on false memories, we need somebody keeping the mental health profession honest.

I am a Masters level Licensed Mental Health practitioner with 30 years of experience. In my early career, I attended numerous workshops and presentations focused on MPD, DID and so-called ritual abuse complete with lovingly rendered and explicitly gory details. I sat through impassioned speeches about the unfailing accuracy of recovered memories and the incapacity of children (who often live as though their and caregivers’ fictions are fact)to tell anything but the absolute truth. I even believed it for a time. And that’s the rub. Facts don’t require belief. We don’t have a scientific, objective, factual and observable measurement for personality, singular. Let alone multiple. Let’s stop giving people more problems than they have.

There may be spoilers here...***Sybil (the original) was one of the most influential books of my young adulthood. It made me consider psychiatry or counseling as a career. Later, as books like "The Courage to Heal" and others came out, and controversy over false memories ensued, I felt that at least "Sybil" was the truth. Even when debate arose after her death, indicating that the multiple personalities were a fabrication, I still believed that the horrific childhood abuse had taken place. Given that, it was no wonder that Shirley Mason dissociated, even if the 16 personalities were a ploy to remain in therapy. But there was so much more than that, and it's horrifying to learn that Mason's main problems were actually induced by her psychiatrist, who was determined to be honored for some historic breakthrough. If Debbie Nathan's account is to be believed, Cornelia Wilbur was the abuser, not Mason's mother. A co-conspirator, albeit a regretful one, was Flora Schreiber, who wrote the original book. Schreiber, like Wilbur, wanted fame, and to be part of something historic. She realized that Wilbur was a problematic personality, but ignored her own misgivings while the book was being written and published.I still pity Shirley Mason as an abuse victim. but now for very different reasons. The only concern I have is that somewhere down the line I will learn that this account was fabricated as well. Once you experience this type of betrayal, even at a reader's distancce, it's hard to be credulous again. That's probably not a bad thing.

As a former Psychiatric research nurse, I've studied historical cases of abuse in research but am truly shocked that this went on in the 60s and 70s without anyone questioning it.The story of Sybil has been around for decades and the validity of the story went unchallenged until all of those involved were dead. Aside from the travesties done to Shirley at the hands of Dr. Wilbur, I am appalled that it has taken this long to expose the fraud and abuse and that there were even people who helped keep this hidden to protect the legacy of Dr. C. Wilbur.

Rather startled by this book. Well researched. No opinion unsubstantiated. I read Sybil when it was first all the rage. Totally believed it all. Questions only now forthcoming.

Ms. Nathan confronts the Multiple Personality Disorder community, or as it is now known, the Disassociative Disorder Community, or DID community, by trying to unravel the strange and unique behavior of the personalities involved in the case of "Sybil", a well known DID whose case was celebrated as a breakthrough when it first came out, and then became the subject of questions. While reading this book, many things appeared to me to be uncertain. Many of the thoughts of those involved in Sybil's case were written as if verbatim, yet these thoughts do not have notes attached as to where they came from. Others have footnotes that indicate that they were taken "in context", but whose context were they taken in? I am sure that there is a lot of information of which I am not aware that would back Ms. Nathan up on some of this, but her discussion of homosexual behavior between some of the participants is, at best, a reach. While there might have been (all of the subjects are dead now, so we cannot ask), what reason is there to bring this up in a book that is written about what is purported to be a fraudulent agreement between people involved? It bears no purpose other than to bring a haze of mystery onto the scene, with a thin layer of innuendo that reeks, to me, of someone saying "If they had an affair, they must have made this stuff up".I believe that this book could have been made better with less fictional conversation (at least conversation and thoughts that seem fictional) and more facts. Ms. Nathan's subjects, many of whom were third and fourth hand (a friend, a cousin, someone who knew someone who knew Sybil, Dr. Wilbur or Ms. Schreiber) seemed to not lend a tone of veracity to the book, as the information seemed to be passed from person to person rather than heard first hand.I understand that the relationship between the three was strained and, in some ways, very codependent, but at the same time, I also feel it could have been handled differently. This, of course, is just my opinion.

Great read! Very insightful, total page turner!

The author makes a number of valid points about this case and the analysis of Sybil. However she has her own bias against the Dissociative Identity disorder and it shows. Her concerns and conclusions about the Sybil case should not be generalized to the disorder as a whole.

Friendship at the Margins: Discovering Mutuality in Service and Mission (Resources for Reconciliation), by Christopher L. Heuertz

Review

"I have needed this book for a long time. That is, I have long needed the clarification it has brought to my own thinking about 'the destitute and impoverished other' and about how, in company with Christ, we all can both engage and bridge the us-them gulf that separates us one from another. So list me first as a grateful recipient of its instruction, and only after that, quote me as having said that Friendship at the Margins is about as readable, instructive and credible a book on missiology and faithful service as I have ever seen or ever even hope to see."--Phyllis Tickle, author of The Great Emergence"Don't miss this book! Heuertz and Pohl extend a gracious invitation to all those of us who thirst for life that really is life. Friendship at the Margins welcomes readers to participate in kingdom friendships which refresh the hearts of all who will drink deeply. Expect to be nourished, challenged and transformed by this book."--Margot Starbuck, author of The Girl in the Orange Dress"Friendship at the Margins calls for a radical reorientation from thinking about 'causes' to thinking about people. We don't just want to help 'the poor, ' we want to help Sujana, Madu and Adalina. And in helping and serving, we discover how much we receive from relationships that stretch beyond our normal social circles. I could not more strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a difference in our world."--Peter Greer, president, HOPE International, and coauthor of The Poor Will Be Glad"In a world of aggressive economics, cynical politics and excessive ideological certitude, everyone is an adversary. Such aggression, cynicism and certitude, moreover, produce unbearable alienation. Here Heuertz and Pohl offer a quiet, honest probe of generous friendship as an antidote to the great social pathology that devours us. With narrative particularity and acute neighborly sensibility, they witness to the cost and risk of friendship, which at its best cannot be done wholesale. This account concerns the truth of human life made fleshly--immediate, face-to-face, dangerous and transformative. They offer much to ponder about how, in a world of too many adversaries, the practice of friendship among the weak and unnoticed may be our hope for the future. A tall order, likely our only alternative!"--Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary"This book will challenge you to the core. It is refreshing to see mission and ministry described as worship. This changes the conversation in a most needed way."--Chris Tomlin, singer/songwriter"Without question you will be challenged and inspired by the words written in Friendship at the Margins. The words, insights and challenge put forth by Chris and Christine will help each one of us truly experience what it means to be a follower of Jesus."--Mike Foster, senior creative principal, PlainJoe Studios, and cofounder, People of the Second Chance and XXXchurch.com"Friendship at the Margins is an important book arising at a time when our culture values success and objects more than relationships. This book is an important challenge that theology must be both received and lived and that our faith requires the ongoing struggle and joy of what may be at times difficult friendships. Calling for substance over form in our actions of justice, Chris Heuertz and Christine Pohl remind us that the living out of God's justice is a two-way street of giving and receiving."--Soong-Chan Rah, Milton B. Engebretson Associate Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism, North Park Theological Seminary, and author of The Next Evangelicalism"Friendship at the Margins weaves together masterfully the life of contemplative activists, friendships, spirituality, simplicity and community to create a refreshingly demystified understanding of mission. The book deals with some 'pain points' in Christian missions like career, community and popular approaches which have become the order of the day in the mission field, unfortunately. The book presents friendship not merely as a manipulative method, but as the heart of mission itself. The authors through the book provide rich insights into their passion and experience."--Jayakumar Christian, National Director, World Vision India"The loud may get the most attention, but more often than not it's the gentle, humble and highly relational that will change the world. Chris Heuertz is one of those people--listen carefully; he has much to say!"--Margaret Feinberg (www.margaretfeinberg.com), author of The Organic God and Scouting the Divine"The religious authorities thought that they were insulting Jesus by calling him a 'friend of tax collectors and sinners' (Mt 11:19). Jesus retorted by claiming that his practice of friendship with such 'undesirables' would be vindicated. Writing to his somewhat difficult friends in Corinth, whom he loved as a father (1 Cor 4:15; 16:24; 2 Cor 2:4), Paul reminded them that he had gotten to know them when they were sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, practicing homosexuals, thieves, greedy, drunkards, slanderers and swindlers before they were washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God (1 Cor 5:9-10; 6:9-11). Friendship at the Margins shares learning from following the path of Jesus and Paul of befriending people at the margins of 'respectable' society today. This is no ivory tower theology but theology worked out in the bittersweet experience of becoming friends with those we respectable people call the 'poor.' There is much here to inspire those of us who think of mission in terms of both telling and serving. In fact I would go further and say that this book is about the essence of Christian mission."--Dewi Hughes, theological adviser, Tearfund

Overall an excellent read. Focuses on the importance and impact a true friendship with those who live at the margins can make. Friendships void of agendas. Friendships void of paternalism. Relationships that grow each other. I didn't agree with all of the material. As one who lives and works among the poor in Albania, I am not convinced yet that I have come here to make friends. Is that truly my mission? Did I sell everything, quit my job, and leave America to come to Albania to make a bunch of friends? Or, did I come here to make disciples and help the poor? In the Great Commission, Jesus doesn't tell us to go into all the nations and make friends. He tells us to make disciples. And, while I am certain that friendships will be made in my endeavors, I am not convinced that is my priority. However, one thing that I have learned the most from in this book is the importance of doing community with those I am reaching. The importance of getting into their world and allowing them to come into mine. That we are here to serve and love each other, and to grow together in Christ. More importantly, that I need to spend more time with the people I serve and not make them my project.Overall, this a book that I highly recommend to those who are doing ministry among impoverished people groups. And, as with any book take it with a grain of salt, where I am certain you will glean some wisdom and wonderful insights from this book.

This fantastic book reframes what it means to minister to people. I have recommended it to many friends. It flies in the face of a "drive-by-ministry" method and leads us to join God on his quest for friends.

So much of what is written echoes my own firsthand experience and encourages me to continue to pursue true relationships with diverse people.

Through this very important book, Chris Heuertz & Christine Pohl help readers to understand Jesus' model for service and mission with fresh eyes and hearts. For those of us who have reaped the benefits of majority, power, and wealth, though, this book can also be pesky. LIke the captivating story about a red button-down shirt which Chris bought at The Gap, only to discover that his friend Sujana in south India labored daily for miserly wages in the factory that produced the shirt. Saddened and convicted, Chris recalls seeing the Isaiah 3:14 injunction against plundering the poor much more vividly, in light of that red shirt. I, in turn, have often found myself thinking back to that red shirt, over the past days. The authors fearlessly move through many issues that are difficult to frame or discuss, but integral to living life at the margins. Issues like moral callousing, need/solution mentality, hunger pornography, cause-driven models of missions, the career missionary paradigm, the awkward relationship between friendship and possessions, and much more. And rather than lapsing into theory, the authors continually bring the issues down to earth. The best example is a Personal Retail Equality Tax (PRET) that Chris assesses to himself. He puts aside 12% of all purchases in a fund, which accrues until Chris' next trip to India, when he gives the money to Sujana. He admits that his PRET is symbolic-- just as important for how it affects Chris as for how it helps support Sujana or address systemic poverty. None of the problems, or the suggested solutions, are treated superficially. I know, though, that I am much the better for having been escorted so fearlessly, faithfully, and humbly into the complexity.

Friendship at the Margins: Discovering Mutuality in Service and Mission (Resources for Reconciliation) by Christopher Heuertz and Christine Pohl is an honest treatment of what happens when the wounded humanity in each of us encounters and collides with the wounded humanity in others.Always challenging in reflection and ever provocative in revelation, this book makes the (re)connection of the major injustices in the world and our own unrighteousness, and simultaneously encourages us to be willing to dive into living in the tension of morally ambiguous or troublesome circumstances in a spirit of prayer and loving community.Perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from this short writing is the words that sum up how the Master Rabbi lived his life :: 'Choosing to be disarmed, as we are present to another person, is not the same as becoming complicit in the wrongdoing.'My first encounter with this book was directly after I had read Andrew Marin'sLove Is an Orientation: Elevating the Conversation with the Gay Community Reading, discussing and meditating on the words of these two books has literally changed my life and drawn me back to the basics of my faith :: living a life purposely directed by the love of God. Each time I crack it open, I lose a bit more of my Self and gain that much more of my soul, and find myself changing the conversation from whether or not I agree with a person to asking the question 'How can I better love this person?'

As a child, my mother and I would always fight over my hair. To end the fighting, she bought this book for me and wished me luck. It worked well. 25 years later, my brother now has two daughters with my massive amount of hair. While Pinterest can provide you with directions on how to create these braids, twists, and bows, it is an easy go-to source for him to learn how to tie up his little girls' hair.

Purchased this volume when my daughters were small, and have now purchased a volume for the granddaughters of a neighbor to assist in their fascination with the braiding of one's another's tresses.

I had this book as a kid and I loved it then. I have 3 girls and no idea how t do hair! I remembered this book and was so happy to find it on Amazon! It is exactly as I remember it! My kiddos love it just as much as I did!

had this book as a kid as ordered for my daughter

Perfect for my 11-year-old daughter!! Fast shipping. Great service! Product met expectations!

for grand children..love this book

A fun book

The hairstyles in the book are very basic, but for mixing it up a bit and giving more hair ideas than the usual it's great. The bows are pretty cute and easy to make if you have the time and supplies.

Shooting in the Wild: An Insider's Account of Making Movies in the Animal Kingdom, by Chris Palmer

From Booklist

Longtime producer Palmer provides an in-depth look at wild animals on film, covering the history of wildlife documentaries, safety issues, and the never-ending pressure to obtain the “money shot.” Marlin Perkins, Jacques Cousteau, Steve Irwin, Timothy Treadwell, and many other familiar names are discussed along with their work, accidents, and in some cases, untimely deaths. Palmer is highly critical of Irwin, and offers fascinating revelations about game farms used by exploitative filmmakers and photographers looking for easy shots and willing to use caged animals to obtain them. He also considers the subliminal messages of many wildlife films, considering everything from Shark Week to Happy Feet and how they manipulate audiences toward preset conclusions about animal behavior. In all this is an engaging and exceedingly timely look at a form of entertainment the public has long taken for granted and which, as Palmer points out, really needs a fresh and careful reconsideration. --Colleen Mondor

Chris Palmer combines the inside knowledge of a consummate industry professional with the concerns of an ethicist in this superb look at the world of environmental and wildlife filmmaking. There has always been a certain amount of tampering with reality in the field, but with a rising demand for new content that has to be on time and on budget, some producers engage in outright deceit or take moral shortcuts. Captive animals are substituted for wild ones, wild ones are provoked into uncharacteristic displays of violence in a lurid grab at ratings. Palmer himself admits that he has incorporated footage of captive animals. He's open and honest as to how his thinking has evolved, and unafraid to name those who knowingly practice deception. This informative, compelling book ends with an eight-point ethic for working and prospective filmmakers. SHOOTING IN THE WILD is an important work by an enlightened filmmaker. Highly recommended.

Over decades of watching wildlife documentaries, I had never heard (or registered) Chris Palmer's name. He's the guy behind the scenes organizing money, politics, policies, lobbying and such - the aspect of wildlife film making that most viewers blissfully ignore. Ignorance is bliss this book confirms.I came across this book as an Amazon recommendation based on a few purchases over the holidays. I thought it was an interesting topic and bought the book after its five-star rating and pages and pages of praise from the who's who of the wildlife world and a preface by Jane Goodall. Chris presents the book very well from the management perspective of the wildlife film making business. However, it's like listening to a politician's speech, which I guess is the flavor of talk for someone who's well-connected in D.C, Wall Street and various lobby groups? :)I took offense to calling Perkins' pitching for Mutual of Omaha in his pioneering documentary series as "prostitution" for a sponsor. This coming from Chris who says he uses the fame of celebrities to sell this movies and the fame of seasoned wildlife luminaries to sell his book (I wouldn't have bought this book if not for the praises). Chris mentions Attenborough several times and never once very positively. And he goes on to say that no one in Africa watches Attenborough anyway because it's all in English (during his praise of Cynthia Moses' work). I'm not so sure I get that argument, unless of course Attenborough's work cannot be translated to any African language. The book skims on some interesting but controversial topics. Raising funds for making a film suits someone who's got name, fame or connections to those with the required traits. Obviously, it's something which Chris is really good at but there's not much advice for someone who does not want to take that route. Not much was said on what happens with the money. For example, the movie 'Whales' took $1 million from NSF and $3 million from NWF and made more than $50 million. Is it ethical to gamble on money paid for by tax-payers (NSF) and members (NWF)? What happens to profits? Who are the buyers? Why not consider giving out documentaries for free as the are already paid for by sponsors? I was expecting more depth on this topic as this is where Chris' expertise would be as a manager/executive. Other topics that just scratches the surface is science versus filmmakers and wildlife management versus filmmakers. There's a lot more people-management skills involved in wildlife filmmaking than naturalist skills and I wished there could be more about that.I'm not a fan of personal attacks and the "my way or the highway" attitude that is a regular theme in the book. I wondered how many of those that were attacked for their documentary styles worked for Chris (Attenborough, Irwin, Brady Barr for example). Perhaps none? Not everyone likes or enjoys Brady Barr or Steve Irwin but there are also those that don't enjoy celebrity-hosted wildlife films as well, so it's probaly not fair to criticize different styles of wildlife films IMHO. Popular presenters are rebuked for not doing enough for conservation. This comes when none of Chris' films have taken on organized big-money big-power industries like oil or mining companies, instead frying little fish like poor sustenance hunters, fishermen and ranchers for conservation's sake.In the beginning Chris talks about sensationalism in a negative way, however nearly every discussion reeks of sensationalism from alligator chasing boats in a storm(really?), to elephants almost dying on film (sounds overly exaggerated) and other dramatic real-life experiences. Science seems to take a backseat except for a few superstars. Apparently all superstar scientists study primates, predators or other such totem species and successful wildlife films revolve around those. It is unfortunate given that we have millions of species and not much is known about them outside the science world. This is a sad state because of the money involved - right from raising funds to making profits. After all, other than the most diehard fans of nature, who wants to watch a documentary on naked mole rats or gut nematodes of a zebra? There's also the occasional hypocrisy in topics ranging from staging to shooting ethics. For example, in the ethics discussion Larry Engel chooses to just shoot a dying elk so as to not interfere with wildlife, but in the next few pages a cameraman's act of removing whale louse (whale lice) from a whale is praised. It's still a good book to read but it is misleading to think it's the state of the industry (if it is, then I'm horrified). It's more like a personal philosophy on making wildlife films. I only have more questions about the "secrets" of making wildlife films after reading this book and thought it was very biased.

This book sheds light on what really takes place behind the scenes in the making of wildlife films. It examines the history of the industry and exposes some of the controversial practices (past and present) that have become all too common. It acknowledges that, although these practices have led to some wonderful moments on film, they have often done so at a cost. Palmer shares his real life experiences and courageously questions some of his own decisions in the pursuit of “the right shot”.The book not only points out many of the questionable techniques involved in the process, it also suggests a path toward more ethical and sustainable practices that will (hopefully) lead to better, more authentic films, while reducing the impact on animals and ecosystems.Consumers and filmmakers alike will benefit from the information. The book should be required reading for anyone contemplating a career in the field of wildlife and natural history filmmaking. Finally someone on the inside has had the courage to address these issues and offer solutions on how the future of wildlife filmmaking might change for the better. A great read.

I'd always suspected that much of what we see in wildlife film and television is too good to be true. The wolf always appears when he or she should, the photographer is always in the right place to catch the cougar taking down the deer, the camera gets into the den to show the mother an her cubs. Palmer reminds us that many great cinematographers and producers of wildlife film and tv do put in the countless and thankless hours necessary to get the right shot at the right time. However, he doesn't pull punches or offer a needless defense of the oft-used practices of staging, creative editing, and downright trickery used by many producers. A great book. There's also a recent PBS special that makes a great companion.
