Dan Moldea is a brave, honest, persistent, independent and experienced journalist who takes on the toughest crime stories.Hollywood Confidential is his diary of a 16-year-long struggle to write a book with and about Anita Busch, a Hollywood reporter, who was harassed in 2002 after co-writing a series on Michael Ovitz, a very powerful Hollywood agent, for the New York Times. Busch was traumatized by the vandalism of her automobile and other perceived threats. She came to believe that Ovitz hired Anthony Pellicano, a private detective in Hollywood, to intimidate her through misinformation, wiretaps and threats of various sorts. A third person vandalized Busch's automobile. He apparently was seeking favor with Pellicano. Given the prominence of both Ovitz and Pellicano, Busch's story was thought to have commercial appeal. She and Moldea entered into an agreement whereby he would write her story; she would have final editorial control; they would split the proceeds 60 to Busch, 40 to Moldea. After working for two years on this book, she breached their deal in light of a lawsuit she had brought.Hollywood Confidential is Moldea's diary of how Busch destroyed this initial book collaboration. It's both painful and enlightening to read the emails going back and forth as Moldea tries to figure out who did and did not do exactly what against Busch. He keeps trying to keep the original book project in place as she slips away from it, leaving him hurt and in debt. Of the two, I think the reader will find that Moldea is the far more reliable chronicler of these events than she even given that this is his version of this total mess.Moldea sees this protracted experience as yet another example of no good deed going unpunished. I agree. I would have cut my losses on the project no later than the third year into it; he stuck it out. That took a lot of time, money and grit. Busch comes across as increasingly stressed out, unreliable, opportunistic, traumatized and untrustworthy. A satisfactory resolution grows more and more unlikely with each passing year.Hollywood Confidential is a deep look into how the sausage of a complicated crime book gets made. It's a first-person narrative of how a plausible journalistic collaboration disintegrates over time, under pressures and as new information emerges. The interplay between writing a book and being involved in various lawsuits is new territory for me, a place I never want to visit. The one reservation I have is that this mess does not appear to be completely played out. Moldea believes that the conclusion will appear this year, 16 years after Anita Busch's 1996 silver Audi was vandalized, "...leaving a rose, a dead fish, and a sign that said, 'STOP,' on her windshield."Curtis Seltzer

I have waited years for a book detailing all the roads & paths of various journalists who were trailing Anthony Pellicano for a book. And the winner is Dan Moldea. He has done a magnificent job of threading a path to the conclusion. nNt an easy task with the variety of players involved. A must read.

For anyone interested in the media, politics, justice--and human nature--this book is further evidence that Dan Moldea is our Marcel Proust.

Ever since “Et tu, Brute” was uttered by Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, backstabbing has been part of the business of entertainment. The art of getting screwed by your so-called friends has been honed to a rocket science in Hollywood, and its effect on serious and hardworking artists and craftsman has long given Los Angeles a bitter and cynical taste that makes the very notion of “La La Land” a joke that is actually pretty funny.“Hollywood Confidential” is the story of how the Wild West opportunism of the entertainment capital can destroy careers, friendships and potentially productive creative partnerships. It also proves that grabbing the brass ring requires the help of a damn good lawyer and an ironclad contract.Venerable author Dan Moldea’s ninth work of non-fiction is the account of the collapse of his once-promising book project delving into the case of private-eye Anthony Pellicano.Pellicano was known as a ruthless, toady henchman of Hollywood’s elite, but his powerful position went into a draconian tailspin after he was linked to an alleged mob-tinged threat against Los Angeles Times reporter Anita Busch, who back in the day was investigating movie mogul Michael Ovitz, among others. A fish on her windshield. That was his really silly offence that started a huge to-the-mattresses war launched by the little lady with the high opinion of herself. In short, Busch and Moldea had teamed up for a time to produce an authoritative true-crime tome centered on Pellicano that would be a best seller and, who knows, maybe a major motion picture. But the project fell apart as Moldea was unceremoniously cut out after two years of steady, meticulous toil. “Hollywood Confidential” recounts in minute and ultimately depressing detail of how he and Busch turned from crusading crime writers and friends to bickering ex-partners who dragged an extensive cast of characters into the muck and wound up with little to show for their efforts and antagonism. No happy ending here. In my mind, it was Busch’s loss, one that she should forever regret.“Hollywood Confidential” is heavily footnoted and includes long, long juicy e-mail threads and stunning blow-by-blow accounts of the feud and Moldea’s long, tedious but brave slog to salvage something out of the doomed project. While Pellicano and even Ovitz have become yesterday’s news, the book is still a solid Hollywood exposé of the human tragedy of relationships in the entertainment industry that Shakespeare would have loved to turn into a screenplay. Am hoping that Moldea is able to pull that off instead.Hollywood Confidential: A True Story of Wiretapping, Friendship, and Betrayal

"Hollywood Confidential" is essential reading for anyone who wants to know the full story behind Hollywood legal battles that have been raging for years. It is curious that the Michael Ovitz contest with Anita Busch was settled within days of the appearance of this book, suggesting that there may be so much truth in the book that both parties did not want to risk trial. Dan Moldea's other works on Robert Kennedy, Vince Foster, Ronald Reagan, and Jimmy Hoffa have proved to be definitive. This book adds another volume to that impressive list. He is one of the nation's premier investigative journalists.

Moldea, who is know for chewing glass in order to win a bet, can be relied upon to tell a tale with no holds barred. He is fearless and follows all leads wherever they may lead. LA is a complex community, but the media has allowed the general public to believe all is hunky dory and full of glitter in the City of the Angels. Nothing could be further from the truth, and this book captures the mood and facade behind the false fronts that make up Hollywood. A terrific read, I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a greater understand of investigative journalism, and the difficulty of knowing who your friends really are .
