I have been trying to learn French for more than ten years. I find the language beautiful and fascinating, but I find that I am either too busy to make my way through a workbook or too overwhelmed by the thought of memorizing all the verb forms. As a native English speaker, conjugation is not something that comes naturally to me, at least not at the level required by languages such as Latin, Spanish, and of course French. I have tried workbooks, podcasts, I have even enrolled in live French classes on more than one occasion, but I always end up with the same thing: a few useful nouns, the ability to count to ten and a foggy memory of present tense conjugations. Ten years later, I still can’t speak French, though my collection of nouns has grown substantially, but for the first time in a long time I believe that I actually CAN learn French.As you may have guessed, I am about to tell you that I owe it all to Frederic Bibard’s eBook and audio companion, “French Verb Drills: Mega Bundle.†I hate to sound corny or overly enthusiastic, but after just a few minutes of following along, Kindle in hand and volume on high, I felt encouraged and confident. I felt excited.I have to say that the best thing about this eBook/audio combination is what feels like the presence of your very own French tutor. The voice on the audio file, perhaps Mr. Bibard himself, was friendly and laid-back. I felt like I knew him, like he was a friend with all the answers saying “C’mon! French is easy!†At the same time, the audio portion is informative and direct. You get the information you need with a brief explanation of the tense being covered and how it is commonly used by native speakers. Then, you hear each conjugation, slowly at first to allow for correct pronunciation, then faster, to demonstrate how native speakers would say it. The next part is the best part of all and the reason it feels as though you have a private tutor in your living room (or car, wherever!): the “quiz.†In the past, I have recorded my own voice going over conjugation drills, holding for a moment to give myself time to remember the answer. I found the practice of quizzing myself in this way to be helpful, but it was time consuming. And, while it helped me remember the conjugations, I was always uncertain of the pronunciation. The audio companion is essentially the best of both worlds. The narrator says a pronoun at random, pauses briefly for response, and then says the appropriate verb conjugation—voila! Your very own deck of audio flashcards! And, each audio file is only a few minutes long, focusing on one verb and one tense at a time. You get right to work without having to sit through an hours-worth of dialogue just to get to the practice portion, making these quick little drills perfect for anyone on the go.Make no mistake that this is, in fact, a workbook of conjugation drills, as the name suggests. This is not the place to start if you have never encountered the language or if you are unfamiliar with the basics of verb conjugation. There is very little hand-holding, here, which may be frustrating at times for a beginner. For example, both the book and the audio files define the twelve verbs before you begin, but there is no overview or “lesson†that breaks down or defines the pronouns covered in the book or the different tenses. The narrator will explain or describe a particular tense from time to time but it is not a given and many of the more complicated tenses are left undefined. A friendly reminder in the form of a chart at the beginning of the book, or a quick audio lesson at the start of each verb section would suffice as a point of reference for anyone who might need a little refresher along the way. That being said, as someone who DID need a refresher course in both pronouns and tenses, I found it helpful in the long run because I was forced to remember. I didn’t know if the audio file would explain this tense or that tense or dive right into the drill, so I was forced to pay attention and come up with my own “cheats.†It also helps that Bibard’s website, “Talk in French†is readily available and easy to use. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site and I would recommend it as an additional resource to anyone serious about learning French.I have very few negative things to say about this book except that it lacks a helpful introduction, and the separated audio files can make for a cluttered workspace. Because the audio files are separate from the eBook, you have to have a kindle with internet access, and the ability to download mp3 files and word documents, or you have to have access to a secondary device such as a phone or computer. This made simultaneous access to both the eBook and the audio files complicated, and simultaneous use is without a doubt the most effective way to utilize the combination. However, I imagine that this problem only applies to those who do not have Audible. It should also be said that while the separation of text and audio was at times inconvenient, the downloadable files now live on my computer and I can access them anytime, anywhere, whether or not I have my Kindle, and whether or not I have access to the internet. As for the “Introduction,†or lack there of, when you first “open†the book you are taken to the drills almost immediately. There is no introduction or “how to†section, nothing that tells you what to expect and how best to use the drill-book, and when I began, I was actually concerned the book had not downloaded correctly. It didn’t take long to figure out how best to use the eBook and audio files together, but a brief introduction to the method and intended use of the combination would have been helpful. That being said, the books missing introduction hardly tarnishes my opinion of the book as a whole and should not discourage others from trying it out for themselves.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is committed to learning French, is looking for real help with conjugations and pronunciation, and anyone who is willing to do the work.
Audio Review:The audio does a nice job at presenting each verb as a presentation before going into the conjugations. I think if I were a beginner the audio would help me more due to the information given before the verbs. I also think the audio does a nice job at explaining the use of each tense, such as passé compose and present. I think the audio helps to know how to pronounce each verb and get used to talking in the french language
This audio bundle was exactly what I needed to easily practice and learn the verbs anywhere. Its a fantastic tool to add to my arsenal you are able to hear exactly how they should be pronounced. You can also hear the "caring" in the voice of the author as he says each word. I did request the pdf copy of the verb drills, no problem, received it right away. I would certainly recommend this verb drill bundle to anyone studying French.
I have taken French classes previously, this book would have been helpful in those classes. It's a wonderful tool and would definitely help those wanting to learn the french language. The audio helps with understanding how the words are pronounced. Usually how you think things are said versus how they are really pronounced aren't always the same. Overall the book is very helpful and I would recommend it.

If you are intermediate or beyond French language student and understand conjugations through the conditional and subjunctive, then this is a great set of drills for those who need reinforcement or review. However, if you are a beginner or need to focus on a particular tense, the arrangement just doesn't reflect the way people learn. Most people learn the present, then the past(s), then the future, and then the conditional and subjunctive. Since the recordings are arranged by verb rather than by tense, you have to figure out how to jump from chapter to chapter to cover each verb in a particular tense. I would have found it more helpful to arrange the chapters by each tense (être through manger). Otherwise I have found the approach and product very useful.
I found this audiobook to be very helpful. Not only is it a great length with many drills, but it is done in such a way that I can listen to it while I do other things, allowing the content to sink in. Everything is divided up into chapters/lessons, which make each part very easy to digest and not at all overwhelming. I am definitely glad I chose this book to sharpen up my French.
