I've read tons of books on productivity and procrastination, from Brian Tracy to David Allen and everything in between. Most authors spend a lot of time on an overview of the process, and explanation of procrastination, or a detailed explanation of the system. But this book is different. It's almost purely based on practical, actionable tips you can start right now. There are lots of practical tips throughout the book, and they're combined in the helpful action guide as well to reference quickly. There are 15 (!) one-time actions you can take now to reduce procrastination, as well as habits to build and emergency techniques to use.I waited a few days after reading the book to write this review to see how well the advice stuck. It's been on point. I've kept up the implementation intentions and other techniques for about a week now, and they're actually getting easier. If you're looking for a brand-new theory or system, look elsewhere. But if you want proven techniques you can start immediately to stop putting things off, buy this book.
If you're a true procrastinator, you might not want to read this book. The problem is that you might actually, secretly like being a procrastinator. It's hard to admit, it's admitting a weakness or an addiction. It's a hard habit to kick.Speaking of habits and addictions, here comes the crucial part:"Without awareness, change is at best luck-based or incidental. Think about it: If you’re not aware of what’s going wrong in your life, how are you going to fix it? If you don’t realize how, when, where, and why you procrastinate, how are you going to prevent it?"Even if you've taken the step of finding this book and reading my review, you're already on your way. You've already taken the first step. Now keep going and at least get to Chapter 2. Then you'll be on your way to a new, happier, lighter, and more productive life.I should know. I was a procrastinator too. I overcame it and now I'm living the life I always wanted to live. You can too.
I learned new techniques that I am already utilizing. Emotion surfing, and ignoring the monkey in my brain who only wants what it wants NOW, are 2 ideas that are described so well, and so simply, that I can see them having a huge impact on my life. Just picturing the monkey clanging cymbals in my mind takes a lot of the power away from my avoidance tendencies. Great book!
I've been a serial procrastinator for much of my life. There are times when I simply cannot push myself to do what I know needs doing. I was sent to time management classes, planner retreats, and given all the productivity tools I could ever dream of during my last round of employment, and they all worked - for about 20 minutes. Because procrastination is not a time management or productivity problem.Nils Salzgeber gets it. He gets to the nitty-gritty of the problem, the uncomfortable truth: it's an emotion problem. In a highly engaging, honest, and easy-to-follow format, Salzgeber takes us through several steps to boost our understanding of what is happening to us, and shows us numerous valuable strategies to overcome our tendency to run away from the task in front of us. After just reading it I felt a massive shift in my own thinking, because hey, knowledge is power! If I can feel a shift in my attitude after just reading something, I know it's good stuff. Thank you, Nils!
Great and practical read for anyone who wants to get things done but struggle with staying focused and discipline. My favorite parts of the book where the three-row spreadsheet which explains everything from avoiding activity, explanation to an actual plan and also how Nils explains that we should always focus only on one task and not million of them. I can resonate on this so much because I tend to procrastinate when I feel overwhelmed by too many things at once and this part of the book reminded me to always keep my laser focus and take it one step at the time.
I as great at procrastinating. This book has lots of tips that are helpful. I have already changed some of my behaviors and my stress level has decreased. I look back at the end of the day to see what I have accomplished. I have stopped beating myself up over what I did not get done. GREAT BOOK!!!
When i started reading this book, right away I realized that Nils gets it. His description of the struggle that a chronic procrastinator goes through on a daily basis is spot on. The more I read the more I realized there is another way out of procrastination. I was really surprised that I was using his advice actively while reading his book, and I was able to read it all in one sitting, something that I have never done before with a book. Great book and great advice.
Nils provides excellent tips for beating procrastination. His book will help you get over the hurdles (and the monkey) that stops you from doing what NEEDS to be done instead of what WANTS to be done. Pick up this book to get help with your procrastination problem.
