The book started well, but once Hakon leaves England his character develops into little more than a shallow caricature, his actions and decisions a constant source of irritation, seeming more foolish and unrealistic than heroic. I'd hoped this would be a passing phase in Hakon's development, but sadly it continued all the way to the tepid ending. From the description, it appears book two will be more of the same. I'll pass.
I absolutely adore this book.My great-grandparents immigrated to America from Norway, so I am familiar with Hakon's story. But Eric Schumacher allowed me to be IN Hakon's story. The author's writing is flawless, as is his attention to historical detail and the richness of the Norse culture. He submerses the reader directly into the midst of the characters and their daily lives. He brought Hakon to life, fleshed him out brilliantly and told his story like no other could have. I was besotted with this book. As soon as I realized that the sequel was going to be released soon, I immediately picked up "God's Hammer" and read it again. (I am not one to read a book a second time through.)Highly recommend to literally everyone breathing.
A historical novel of this caliber is a rare and wonderful thing. So well-informed, God's Hammer tells the true story of the son of a Viking king, starting with his stay in England under King Athelstan, where he found a love of Christianity. Upon his father's death, his brother Eric takes the throne by force and with bloodshed, murdering his two brother's in the process. We follow Hakon Haraldsson, as he travels home to face his brother in battle. Can he fulfill his dream of becoming Norway's first Christian King? Or will his unscrupulous brother shed more blood to keep the throne.Although this novel is inspired by real historical events, they were previously unknown by me. I had no idea what would happen, and as history doesn't have many happy endings, I was gripped right the way through. Plus I felt like I learned something too – a fascinating historical tale, that was rich in detail and brought Europe in the 900s to life. If only history at school could have been this interesting and exciting...I would have definitely not have failed that A-level.Well done Eric Schumacher.
Maybe I shouldn't give this first in the series 5 stars, but 4 1/2 isn't an option, and since I am halfway through the second of the series I decided it was time to stop for a moment and write this review. I have read others of this genre and yes some may be better. Yet this is a definite Read!To think that a 14-15 year old is seeking to become a king and does it so well is amazing. He is not a perfect, which is a good thing, it allows us to relate to him. He struggles to learn and remember his homeland and its people. He shows wisdom beyond his years and mercy that displays his faith. Although the mercy he shows is not always in his best interest, he is man enough to admit it and face the consequences. In addition, I appreciate the author explaining and detailing the differences between his fictional telling and historical records.
Great book and historically relevant. Writes a great story that is similar to the greats like Conn, and Bernard that provides true historic insights ... I admired the chance he took with the main character being real, vs telling the story through the eyes of another fictional character. Kudos , he should quit his day job so I have more to read!
This is book one of Hakon’s Saga, the historic tale of a young boy of Norse lineage who is adopted by King Athelstan of the Northumbrians. Brought up in the Christian tradition and baptized as one, he was to become the heir to a kingdom in Norway. His brothers fought over ascension to that title resulting in one brother assuming control by treachery and murder. Young Hakon returns to Norway to depose his evil brother and assume control as the first Christian king of the Vikings. Colorful characters and an unrequited love are entwined in gory fight scenes characteristic of the Viking lifestyle.
Never a dull moment-intriguing background, and fascinating story about Hakon-Norway's "fostri-Prince" turned king.At 15 this kid was more of a man than most 30 yr olds of today.Loved it!Can't wait to read the next book in series and sincerely hope Eric Schumacher has another book brewing!! Great job.
This book does a good job of describing the Norse scenery and some of the typical everyday lives of the northerners. The battle action was well-defined.
