I have been enjoying reading quite a few novellas in the last couple of weeks. They have all been good stories, but I am especially impressed when an author can truly create a full story, within the length of a novella, that has vibrant characters that come to life. Courted by a Cowboy is one of those novellas. I felt that I fully knew the characters and that there was plenty of time to develop them and their relationships with others. The story was interesting from the beginning to the end and I did not feel in any way that it was too short, as sometimes can happen with a novella. I am now reading the next full-length book in the series, Roping the Wrangler, and I am really enjoying it. Courted by a Cowboy is the first book by Lacy Williams that I have read and it will definitely not be the last. I am always excited when I find a “new to me†author whose writing style really fits with what I like to read.
I really enjoyed this short story. I'd say it's somewhere between a 3 1/2 and 4 star read, hence the 4 star rating. This little story is not only about love, but also about coming into your own as an adult. The hero, Sam, is pretty young, only 20 years old. His father is a wealthy businessman who never really had time for Sam. As a teenager, in an attempt to gain his father's attention, Sam acted up and was always in trouble. Finally, his sister and her husband took young him in hand and introduced him to the life of a cowboy. Thanks to them, Sam matured and turned into a fine young man. Now he's trying to make amends and gain his father's approval and respect by taking on the job of making his father's bank profitable. He has six weeks to make this happen by collecting on overdue mortgages or calling in loans. Sam is determined to succeed and make his father proud. However, he's distracted from his goal by the ever appealing Emily, the young woman he loved years before. Emily is the eldest daughter of the mercantile owner. Ever since her mother died Emily has been inundated with responsibilities to her family, taking care of her grief stricken father and younger sister. When Emily learns that Sam has returned to town and is working at his father's bank, she decides to approach him about an extension on her family's loan. As feelings develop between herself and Sam, however, Emily is reluctant to broach the subject. The romance between Emily and Sam is sweet and clean. As is typical in a novella, the plot progressed very quickly to the HEA. This book is a very sweet read, nicely written, and enjoyable.
Courted by a Cowboy (Wyoming Legacy)sam castlecocks father sent sam to bear creek wyoming to his bank,he dasen`t been there for 2 years,he was in love with emily but she was in love with someone else,so he left ,he couldn`t stand to watch them. sam father send him back there to call in some loans at the bank he owned,he had 6weeks to do it if he wanted his fathers respect back,he didn`t know he would run into emily his 1st day back.they talked and he told her what he was doing there, but didn`t know that her father was one of the loans he would have to call in,so he was trying to stay away from her because of it,but it was impossible to do he still loved her. she helped him to meet the towns people, and learned of there troubles and that they really did want to pay back there loans, but needed help. well i guess thats all i can tell you, don`t want to give you the best part,so it is a must buy, cause it is a really great story and you`ll love it,i know i did.
I am hypercritical of short stories because few authors can write them well. I thought this one was very well done, way better than most short stories in that it had all the necessary parts of a novel (a beginning, a climax and an ending) as well as sufficient character development in the limited pages available. Not only that, I would be interested in reading more in this series.
I normally don't read short stories because they are often done poorly, either with editing and or character/story development. Couldn't pass this one up because it had cowboys and the Old West. It was refreshing to not find any spelling or grammar mistakes. This was pretty well written because the author was able to show decent character development. The reader can fully understand the dilemma Sam is in when Emily takes him around to meet the townspeople. The down side was the predictability. I knew where it was headed within about the first five pages and it wasn't long enough to throw in any suspense or interesting side stories. With all that said, I'll look for more from this author. Would like to see what she does with a full length novel.
Sam is determined to prove himself to his father, a man that hasn't thought highly of him. In more ways than Sam can count he has failed and disappointed his father time and time again. But Sam is grasping at this last chance to prove he isn't a failure and can collect on the banks delinquent loans. There is only one problem, the father of the girl he has fallen in love with has one of the most outstanding debts.Courted by a Cowboy is not the genre I normally read. But Lacy has proved herself to be a very gifted writer by keeping me hooked from the very first chapter. I looked forward to reading more from Lacy, and hearing about Sam's friend Oscar White, in her next book "Roping the Wrangler..."
I'm disappointed to see the mediocre reviews. I found it heartwarming and refreshing. It's long enough to develop a story, yet not so long you can't finish it in an hour or so. Sometimes, I want a short, feel-good story and this fit that description. Both main characters are struggling with some forgiveness issues. I appreciated the uncomplicated manner in which those were dealt with and how they were able to move on to a future with each other. Again, this is a short story, it's not going to be too deep. So, if you're in the mood for that as well as searching for a clean, uplifting, WHOLESOME story, then you'll enjoy "Courted by a Cowboy."
