Jonathan Ward's excellent Rocket Ranch: The Nuts and Bolts of the Apollo Moon Program at Kennedy Space Center described how the major facilities at KSC functioned, and what it was like to actually work there. "Countdown to a Moon Launch" explains how everything was brought together in the months and days leading up to an Apollo launch. Like its companion, it contains a healthy dose of obscure photographs, diagrams, and first-hand accounts, which I'd never seen or read before. It follows, in intricate detail, the processing flows of the Apollo 11 spacecraft and Saturn V launch vehicle, from their arrival at Kennedy Space Center to the moment of launch. Ward describes the enormous amount of testing each stage and module underwent, the complexities of KSC management and scheduling, and the important work of NASA and contractor QA officials. I'm probably shortchanging the scope of this work somewhat; Mr. Ward squeezes in an impressive number of perspectives here, from the man operating the VAB crane, to the engineers in the firing room, to the astronauts conducting tests in an MSOB vacuum chamber. Kennedy Space Center is often thought of as just "the place where the rocket took off," so it's genuinely pleasing to see two books of such depth devoted to it.Like "Rocket Ranch," this book is exceptionally detailed and revealing. Unfortunately, it falls a little short in terms of readability when compared with it. It's a longer, more detail-oriented work, and doesn't flow quite as well. Although the sections on spacecraft and launch vehicle processing are absolutely fascinating, the early chapters on management and scheduling are a bit of a slog. There are plenty of first-hand accounts from former KSC employees, which gives a very hardware-oriented book a necessary human element. The accounts of some of the major snags encountered during spacecraft processing were enlightening, including the comical tale of the S-II "spacer," and the errant cutoff signal which almost terminated the Skylab 2 mission milliseconds after launch.Although I didn't enjoy it quite as much as "Rocket Ranch," this is nonetheless a necessary book which demands to be read by serious space buffs. I've been studying manned spaceflight for 20 years and was genuinely shocked by how much new material I found in these two books. I highly recommend them to anyone whose interest in Apollo goes beyond the astronauts and mission control.

With over 300 books about Apollo in my collection, including technical manuals, I never thought that I'd find one book that could make sense of the thousands of steps and the interactions of parts and people required to fly the most powerful peace time machine ever created. Written in a style that makes it enjoyable and understandable to everyone, it puts all the pieces together in a chronological "countdown" order and explains how each part that arrived at KSC was tested, stacked, readied, fueled, moved and finally flown to the moon as well as the time from liftoff that each event happened. If you are going to read just one book to try and grasp the complexity and magnitude that was, flying the moon rocket, start here. The closer you get to T minus 8.9 seconds, trust me, you wont be able to put it down.

In both “Countdown to a Moon Launch" and its companion volume "Rocket Ranch”, Jonathan Ward offers a fresh perspective and detailed account on what transpired ON THE GROUND at the Kennedy Space Center during America’s massive effort to get to the moon in the 1960’s. I’ve read about every space history book out there and was pleasantly surprised at the level of new and interesting information that is contained in these two volumes. After reading these books I’m truly amazed at just how little I knew about launch operations, processing and the facilities at KSC during the Apollo era. Although they present many technical and thoroughly researched aspects of KSC’s role in getting man to the moon, these books do not read like a doctoral thesis. They fill a previously large gap in the literature that I wasn’t aware even existed. They strike the perfect balance between presenting the technical aspects of launch preparations and the personal side of what it must have been like to be a part of the Apollo workforce during this incredible time in the history of manned space flight. The overall flow of these two books really makes the reader feel like they have gone back in time and were given their own personal VIP tour of the Kennedy Space Center. If you have even the slightest interest in the early history of manned space flight, these two volumes deserve to be in your library.

this was a good read, I would have given it 5 stars, but I had trouble with it dancing between eras, I'd just about get into the story line and it would switch back of forwards in time.I'm sure some people like that but it was too confusing for me.His version of Lydia is different from what I would imagine.

Until I got to know the characters, I was a little confused as the story shifted from one time in Lydia's life to another. But the further I got into in, the better it got. It was the story of a very interesting woman who was ahead of her time. And now at the end, I am so glad I read this book.

Physical exercise is at first a hobby and then a reprieve for Lydia as she grows older. Her will to run reflects the tenacious heart inside her that longs for something more. Leaving her family behind is difficult for Lydia, but hope for the future propels her on. It is that abiding hope and tenacious spirit that will lead her to God.The reader of this story has a unique perspective as the narrative starts at the end of Lydia's life and the reader learns about Lydia's past as her life is concluding. The book seems to be Biblically accurate. Though Lydia is mentioned in the Bible and a few facts are given about her, the majority of her life story remains obscure. That's where the fiction portion comes in.Unfortunately, for some reason, I found this book to be depressing. I am not sure if it is because Lydia is literally dying from the beginning of the book until the end or if it is something else. Though the plot of the book moved a little slow for my liking, the conclusion was pretty good. I did enjoy the very unique character of Xerxes. However, because of the depressing nature of the book, I have to recommend renting this book from the library before buying.

Lydia has always done the unexpected. As a child, she entered a race against boys and won. She chose a man close to her own age to wed, which was not done in the ancient Greek society of her upbringing. She was cursed by the Sibyl to be covered in blood. She cut off all her and delivered herself to the Sibyl's shrine, only to be told that that was not the life for her. Lydia goes back home and marries her young man, Menander. She leads a most solitary life after this. Her husband dies, as does her son, and she holds herself apart from her daughter. Her attention and care is lavished on her cloth dyeing business, inherited from her uncle, the only family member who approved of her. Through first a slave of her former household, and then through a family of cloth weavers, she becomes involved in the Jewish faith. Then she meets Paul, and becomes a follower of Christ. But there is more Lydia must learn, if her life is to be complete. Lydia's story is told as she is an old woman, from her deathbed. The flashbacks, while occasionally disjointed, are entirely sympathetic. A fascinating glimpse into an unfamiliar time.

Lemmons has once again penned a very readable and intelligent book on a fascinating character in the perspective that he alone seems to be able to pull off with great success. Read it when you have time to read it all--pick a weekend and dig into this fascinating personality of the Old Testament.

This is an impeccably researched and referenced account of the Theranos saga. As a long-time observer and sometime competitor of Theranos I watched this tale unfold whilst working at a couple of established IVD companies. Everyone I knew who had ever developed an assay or instrument knew this was smoke and mirrors, impossibly too good to be true. What I never suspected was just how personally dishonest EH had been, and for how long the complex deception was maintained. Whilst I've met a few egregious individuals working for big companies, there are enough checks and balances (QA/RA, Med/Sci Affairs, CLSs and other professionals etc) in place to stop harmful devices getting out the door.The subject matter - developing devices and assays - is a complex dry topic, difficult to write engagingly about. But JC does a workmanlike job and I read this in one go after its midnight Kindle release. My only nit to pick is the poor editing: there are so many uses of '....named....' as in 'an engineer named John Smith' or 'a restaurant named Joe's Bar' that it got irritating. Find/replace 'named' with a comma would have worked fine in most cases. The text was also repetitive - eg '...an award named after Channing...' gets at least 2 mentions. But not enough to lose a star.Kudos to the good people at Theranos who had the courage to get the story out and for JCs persistence into a headwind of legalistic intimidation. I've heard Theranos is now a case-study for MBA students: this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about 'disrupting' the medical devices industry. There are lives at stake.

I started this book and could not put it down. It's a horrifying true story of a driven entrepreneur whose only overriding goal was to become insanely rich. And she would do anything, any unimagineable thing, to get there.Elizabeth Holmes leveraged her family's high profile connections to draw in early investors and supporters, who were not very inquisitive on details, nor very skeptical in nature. Drawing on the good name and reputation of these early supporters, she was able to build an impressive roster of other supporters with stellar reputations in tech and venture capital circles. From there, it was just a matter of stage managing the house of cards she was building.Holmes crafted a Potemkin village that had fooled investors, customers, and visiting dignitaries. Her product demonstrations were outright theater, staged managed illusions worthy of David Copperfield. Theranos employees in on the ruse were assured it was just temporary, until the actual product could be perfected and the results repeatable. That day would never come. Those on the outside who also worked in this field had well founded and grave doubts about how Theranos could be touting a product that seemingly defied both logic and physics. Their suspicions, proven to be correct, was that it was too good to be true.Without a trace of guilt or regret, she induced powerful tech workers to leave lucrative careers at other major tech firms, giving up millions in stock options, to come work for Theranos, surely knowing the whole thing would collapse one day. When skeptical board members asked to see data affirming the effectiveness of their product, Holmes would defer, saying those papers were in perpetual legal review. Some employees, when they were no longer useful to her, or deemed disloyal, were immediately and unceremoniously marched out.This is a real life thriller, the story of someone who is a true diabolical movie villain. Holmes is portrayed vividly as a paranoid sociopath who could also be disarming, charmingly manipulative, utterly ruthless and devoid of conscience. It takes a mighty strong person and an incredible investigative journalist to take down a multibillion company lead by a CEO and her partner who are doing nothing but telling lies, mistreating their employees, taking millions of dollars under false pretenses from Fortune 500 businesses and wealthy investors, betraying their esteemed board members, and worst and most harmful of all, putting the lives of their end customers in serious jeopardy because the technology that they claim to have engineered does not exist nor has it been FDA approved or tested. This is John Carreyrou’s BAD BLOOD: SECRETS AND LIES IN A SILICON VALLEY STARTUP. Carreyrou went to monumental lengths over the course of several years, with the help of named and unnamed sources who worked or were connected to Theranos, the company, which claimed to have created a blood-testing device that with ‘one drop of blood’ could obtain hundreds of test results thus saving lives.
